Biography

I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I have had full access to top-level education and loving parents. Since I was a kid, painting, drawing and building objects have been my favourite entertainment. At the age of 13, I started attending the Parque Laje School of Visual Arts. There, I experienced a unique sense of freedom. It was in this artistic and creative environment that I started learning how to think, process my own questions and seek for solutions.

As a teacher at my art studio, Cedro da Gavea Ateliê, I’ve been working on providing the same atmosphere where all students can just be themselves.

Visual arts have always given meaning to my life. I’ve been trying to link art and social inclusion as a life project. In fact, I’ve been 100% focused on developing a personal art project in which I may contribute to transform people’s lives as well as mine.

Artist Statement

My artwork production is directly linked to my habits, routine and anxieties. I work with discarded materials and cover themes such as: identity, the woman’s condition in historical context, racial issues, moral and family concepts, the interference of politics in private life, sustainability, life and survival in our society.

My bases are usually made of discarded paper. I rescue them from crumpled garbage and torn pieces of paper. I take care of each piece. I appropriate myself of them and, by inherent chance at unimportant things, make them the essence of my work. Trash reflects social inequalities and the inattention of each individual. As I roll trash cans, I wonder about my own identity and seek meaning for all that we are living as human being.

I assemble my works in form of books. They are diaries where my consumption habits, affective relationships, my insomnia and worldview are recorded. To compose the images, I use mixed techniques, which include collage, sewing, painting and drawing. The overlapped materials make the work a hybrid of painting and sculpture.

My art practice expands my teaching and volunteering work. In the classrooms as on the streets, I try to direct the attention to leftovers, making visible what does not want to be seen. Each environment produces a different kind of art. My goal is to test different environments for new results.
